What too of the cleverly deceptive marketing ploy with feeding our cats fish? Yes, we know they love it and it is added to almost every brand of commercial cat food…..but CATS ARE LAND MAMMALS AND THEY WOULD NEVER CHOOSE TO JUMP INTO ANY WATER TO CATCH FISH! The addition of fish in cat food is the LEADING CAUSE of skin allergies in cats as shown in the graph below by Nextmune dermatology –
A quick Google search using the terms ‘toxins fish cat food’ opens up a whole array of articles that pet food companies would never want us to know –
Heavy metals more likely to affect dogs and cats as high levels in meat and fish-based cat foods of Cadmium, Mercury, Lead and Arsenic compared to plant-based cat and dog foods.
As fish undergo bacterial putrefaction as soon as they are taken out of water, ethoxyquin is a preservative used in fish meal, particularly during transport and storage. It has been banned in some jurisdictions for human consumption, and there is some evidence it is harmful to a cat and dog’s liver function.
Many fish-based pet foods contain ethoxyquin, and there is no regulation requiring it to be labelled on pet foods.
Far more of a concern though that NO pet food company would ever mention for the health of our cats is – Cats fed foods high in fish can suffer from kidney disease (CKD) with high levels of Arsenic found in affected kidneys!
